I just finished "Pope Joan" which was hard to read at first because of the oppressive culture of the time - but ended the book with an increased interest in the high medieval world of the 9th century - termed the darkest of the dark ages. The Franks, the Lombards, the Frisians the Saxons, the Saracens - who were all these people? The Holy Roman Empire was neither holy, roman nor an empire. The station of women was appalling. Made me so grateful for the privileges of this modern age. Feeling sorry about the slow decline of Mitt. One commentator said he was just too boring and bureaucratic. We have been talking in wonderment about Pres. Hinckley's life which was quite remarkable. He had vision about the kingdom similar to Joseph Smith's.
